Some are part of my childhood memory 
while others have been penned from the 
perspective of a participant or spectator. 
Interwoven are the values I was brought 
up with: to speak the truth, to confront 
intolerable ideas with equanimity, to persist 
no matter what the odds, to face the devils 
within and without, to be tolerant of ideas 
and faiths and to love one’s country beyond 
measure – but not blindly.
